CCJA's Summer Institute offers something for everyone, from middle schoolers to adult musicians. Immerse yourself in topic-based courses and action-packed themed and jazz ensembles for a week at a time! Summer Institute classes are easy to mix and match - students can participate in more than one at a time and are welcome to join us for one or multiple weeks

Week 1

Week 1: June 5-9, 2023 - Denver
 

The following classes and ensembles will meet daily at 800 Kalamath St. in Denver. Tuition for each session is $185, adult group tuition is $260. Need-based scholarships are available - inquire with Domi at domi@jazzarts.org.

4:30-6pm:

Arranging Class

Open to students ages 14-adult, the Summer Institute Arranging Class is a great way to learn how to adapt and arrange the music you love in your own personal style, for your group. Students will learn from a professional arranger and composer about voicings and other arranging techniques in order to make an arrangement of their very own. Some knowledge of jazz theory is required.

Funk Ensemble

Open to students in high school, the Summer Institute Funk Ensemble is a great opportunity for students to work on Funk music playing and techniques. Students will work with a local professional musician on Funk repertoire. This session will culminate with a concert open to the public on June 9th at 6:30pm.

Learn To Play Class

Open to students from 14-adult, our Summer Institute Learn to Play Class will take you from picking out an instrument, to playing songs by the end of the week! This is a great opportunity to start learning an instrument of your choice. Whether your school does not have a band, or you have been wanting to learn an instrument for 40 years, we can help you start your journey!

ii-V-FUN Workshop

Open to students in middle school and high school, the Summer Institute 2-5-FUN is a great way for students to learn to master the 2-5-1 chord progression. Students will work with a professional jazz musician to learn the ins and outs of this classic chord progression, there is a lot to explore, so come ready to play!

Student Small Groups

Open to students in middle school and high school, the Summer Institute small groups are a great way for students to work on their improvisation and ensemble playing with like-minded peers. Each group will be directed and mentored by a local professional musician. This session will culminate with a concert open to the public on on June 9th at 6:30pm.

7-8:30pm:

Beginning Adult Group

Open to adults, the Summer Institute Beginning Adult group is a great opportunity to learn the basics of playing with a jazz small group. Students will work with a local professional musician on basic jazz repertoire, improvisation, and jazz ensemble playing. No prior jazz experience is necessary, but some experience on your instrument is required. This session will meet twice a week on Tuesday and Thursday for 3 weeks and will culminate with a concert open to the public on June 23rd at 6:30pm.

Adult Small Group

The Denver CCJA Adult Group will meet twice a week on Tuesdays and Thursdays for 3 weeks in the month of June. There, CCJA students and faculty play and perform together as they study jazz improvisation, technique, style, theory, and history. Students are encouraged to express themselves improvisationally and through composing/arranging for their groups. This session will culminate in a performance for the public on June 23rd at 6:30pm.

Denver Classes

10:00am - 1pm:

Percussion Camp

Are you ready to take your percussion skills to the next level? Join us for a 5-day percussion camp, where you'll have the opportunity to learn and practice Jazz Vibes, Modern Drumset, and World Percussion for 3 hours each day.


Our experienced instructors will guide you through rehearsals, performances, and listening sessions, helping you develop your skills and confidence as a percussionist.


Whether you're a beginner or an experienced player, this camp is the perfect opportunity to immerse yourself in the world of percussion and take your playing to new heights.

4:30-6pm:

Composition Class

Open to students ages 14-adult, the Summer Institute Composition Class is a great way to learn how to create and write music in the jazz style. Students will learn from a professional arranger and composer about voicings and other composition techniques in order to compose a piece of their very own. Some knowledge of jazz theory is required.

Latin Ensemble

Open to students in high school, the Summer Institute Latin Ensemble is a great opportunity for students to work on Latin jazz playing and techniques. Students will work with a local professional musician on Latin jazz repertoire. This session will culminate with a concert open to the public on June 23rd at 6:30pm.

Hip Hop Meet Jazz Workshop

Open to students from 14-adult, our Summer Institute Hip Hop Meets Jazz Workshop is an all new experience. During the workshop you will learn from a professional musician about the relationships between Jazz and Hip Hop. More info to come soon.

Group Lessons

Open to students 14-adult, the Summer Institute Group Lessons is a an extension of our Learn to Play Class in week 1. Students will work with a professional musicians in order to continue learning their new instrument. This class is for student with little experience on their instrument.

Student Small Groups

Open to students in middle school and high school, the Summer Institute small groups are a great way for students to work on their improvisation and ensemble playing with like-minded peers. Each group will be directed and mentored by a local professional musician. This session will culminate with a concert open to the public on June 23rd at 6:30pm.
