Cowell Elementary
CCJA's programs at Cowell Elementary bring music education to over 300 diverse students at a DPS school that had been without music education for years due to budget constraints.
Up to 50 students participate in our Learn-to-Sing choir and Learn-to-Play band after-school programs, and every one of Cowell's K-5 students participates in our during-school KinderBop program. KinderBop teaches students music appreciation, jazz history, and basic techniques on percussion, keyboards, and ukuleles.
Music for All!
Holding these programs on-site removes all barriers - including time, transportation, and cost - for the school’s hardworking and primarily low-income families. Bilingual CCJA musician-mentors ensure that Cowell's English-learners can engage without difficulty. This community-based model ensures that 100% of students can participate in steady and reliable during-and after-school enrichment programs.
Testimonial
According to Liliana Melendez, the principal at Cowell, prior to our programs being introduced, no students had the privilege of playing an instrument or taking private lessons. Stories of students who have struggled academically and socially, but who are now blossoming through their involvement in CCJA's music programs are not only heartwarming but have cemented our commitment to these children and this community.
