"...the intelligent, responsible pursuit of things that really matter - to the spirit, to the soul - is the best and most reliable path to genuine success in the world." -Bill Strickland
Fall Small Group Program has begun, but there are a few spots left...see below.
Boulder groups will meet on Monday evenings from 7-9pm at the Macky Auditorium building at CU Boulder beginning August 30, and continuing through November 1 (no rehearsal on Labor Day, Sept 6). (Both Boulder groups are now full, and there is now a wait list. If we get a few more people interested, we'll start another Boulder group on Mondays, Sept 13-Nov 1)
Denver groups will meet on Tuesday evenings from 7-9pm at Lamont School of Music in the Newman Center for the Performing Arts on the DU campus, beginning September 7 and continuing through November 2. (Rhythm section spots are gone, however there are a few spots still open for brass and woodwinds.)
Highlands Ranch groups will meet on Tuesday evening from 6:30-8:30 at Summitview Elementary, beginning Sept 7 and continuing through Nov 2. (Still a couple spots open for brass or woodwinds)
Denver, Highlands Ranch and Boulder groups will then perform end-of-the-session concerts at Dazzle Jazz Club on November 8 and 9 (each groups performs ONE of those nights.)
There will also be groups in Fort Collins! They will meet at the First United Method Church on Tuesday evenings from 6:45-8:45pm, beginning Sept 7 and continuing through Nov 2. There will then be a concert...details to be announced soon.
Registration for all locations is now open, and will continue through August 23 for Boulder groups, and Sept 1 for DU, Highlands Ranch, and Fort Collins groups.
If you are new to CCJA, please fill out an online application and remit the $15 application fee. If you've been in a CCJA program before, please fill out this online registration form and remit at least half of the $300 tuition to hold your spot. For more information about the Small Group Program, click HERE.
If you have been enrolled in a CCJA session within the last year, you have priority registration, however places are filled in the order that registration is received. There is a wait list for drummers, so auditions for drum spots will take place in August. Please email paul@jazzarts.org to schedule an audition.
Announcing CCJA's newest program... (We are still registering students for this group!)
The New Groove Orchestra:
Building Musical Connections Through Jazz Literacy and Performance
For the last 20 years, music teach Joe Anderies has inspired elementary school music students to learn music through a ground-breaking educational model designed to give younger players (primarily 6th graders) the opportunity to play in a large jazz group, alongside professional jazz mentor musicians. Joe's work in Douglas County has been recognized at international levels, and many of his students have gone on to play in CCJA small groups over the years. Due to recent budget woes in Douglas County, Joe's program has been cut, and he has moved into a middle school band director position. We have witnessed the value of this program over the years, and have decided to start a similar one run independently by CCJA. Joe has helped us in the planning of it, and we're excited to begin next month! A group like this is so great for younger musicians, and allows them to play types of music that most people their age do not get a chance to experience. They also get to explore self-expression through improvisation, while continuing to build their basic music skills. For now, we're starting this program in Douglas County, at Summit View elementary, but we hope to offer it in other areas in the near future. Click here for more information and/or to register for his exciting new group!
14 Channels, the first CCJA student album, is available now!
What the critics have to say:
"...there's nothing here I don't enjoy -- even the flute solos." (Tom Hull - Village Voice)
"When I hear such positive music, as displayed on "Fourteen Channels", I refuse to believe that jazz is dying." (CultureCreature)
"this album is an unexpected surprise and a recording worth spinning often. Kudos to the young cats at CCJA; if this is an indication of the state of jazz today, then, I can only surmise, despite the bad press, jazz has a bright future..." (ejazznews.com)
"This is simply one ripping good big band date that will have you enchanted throughout. Well done." (Midwest Record)
"These 17 young men and women are skilled musicians worthy of notice. And their recording gives hope that the art of jazz is not entirely lost." (www.smooth-jazz.de)
Charted #41 on JazzWeek!
Congrats to Cameron Hicks for winning the 2010 Downbeat award for Best College Orginial Song for his tune "Antics"...track #5 on the CD!
Last summer, 16 CCJA students & alumni spent a week recording an album, learning about how to edit, mix, and master a recording sesssion, and having classes on how to promote a record and create a publishing company. After months of mixing, mastering, finalizing artwork, and getting all the pieces put together, we are proud to announce that the album is available for order now! CCJA cookbooks!
This doesn’t exactly sound like a typical “jazz” endeavor, but we assure you, we have made it as jazzy as possible. The book features food recipes from local jazz musicians and members of the Denver jazz community, as well as some CCJA alumni, faculty, and board members. In addition, each of the contributors has given their “recipe for success,” which is words of wisdom and advice for music, life, or both. As a special addition, we also have such words of wisdom from internationally acclaimed musicians, just for this book, such as Lewis Nash, Arturo Sandoval, John Clayton, Maria Schneider, Michel Camilo, Gordon Goodwin, Patti Austin, Sean Jones, Tom Harrell, and more. These recipes for success are truly inspiring! The book also has photos throughout, and 37 delicious, unique recipes, many of which have been handed down through families for generations. Some of them have actually been created just for this book, by musicians who like to improvise in the kitchen as well. The book is 80 pages, 8 1/2 x 11 softcover, b &w.
