Summer Institute 2008!
If you would like to register for any of the summer classes/ensembles, please email us your name, phone, instrument, age (if under 21), school (if applicable) and the title(s) of the class you would like to register for. There is a $50 deposit required for each class, and that can be paid HERE using a credit card, or you can mail a check to CCJA 4505 W 36th Ave. Denver, CO 80212. Please email or call Paul Romaine at 720-201-6885 if you have any questions. Note that most of the classes are open to adults as well! We will contact you with registration confirmation and more details.
Summer Big Band
Instructors: Greg Gisbert & Paul Romaine
Two different bands (see below) will be directed primarily by Greg Gisbert, with assistance by Paul Romaine. Greg has incredible big band experience, as he has played with such groups as the Maria Schneider Jazz Orchestra, Dizzy Gillespie All-Stars, the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, the Jaco Pastorius Big Band, Woody Herman, Buddy Rich, Frank Sinatra, to truly name a few. Studying big band under him gives you some of the best insight, knowledge, and experience available today.
Dates: Mondays & Thursdays, June 23 - July 17,
concerts on July 19 (afternoon) and July 21(eve)
Section 1: (advanced) ages 16 - adult w/ significant jazz experience; by instructor permission 5:00 - 7:00pm
Section 2: (intermediate) ages 14 - 18 7:15 - 9:15pm

Latin Jazz Ensemble
Instructor: Eric Trujiilo
Percussion, bass, piano, guitar, saxes, trumpet and trombone are all welcome for this exciting group under the direction of Eric Trujillo. Sr. Trujillo studied at Metro State College and the Berklee School of Music, and has gone on be a busy freelance saxophone and latin percussion artist and educator. He is the director of Mambotet and the Latin Arts and Music Project, and is a Meinl Percussion artist. This ensemble is not for beginners. Experience in ensemble playing and improvisation required. The last meeting will be a live concert along with the summer big bands.

The Art of Guitar Comping
Instructor: Mike Abbott
In this 3-week intensive class, you will get deep into the chord theory and voicings that you will need for a variety of group settings. In addition, we will expand your rhythmic vocabulary in swing, latin, and funk genres. 2-3 years experience recommended.

Studio Recording
If you have dreams of being a professional musician, you'd better be prepared when you get your chance in the studio. This class will teach you about the processes involved in professional recording sessions and will provide you with a working knowledge of technology and terminology used in the studio. Scott is co-owner of Mile High Music Studios and has extensive experience in live and studio engineering.
July 22, 23, 24 from 7 - 9 pm at Mile High Music Studios in Arvada. Ages 14 - adult Cost: $75
Composer’s Workshop
Instructors: Wil Swindler
Students will explore the fundamentals of jazz composing for various size groups, and receive feedback and support for pieces they will write during the session. A foundational knowledge of jazz theory is required. Class size limited.
Composer and Saxophonist, Wil Swindler resides near Denver, Colorado where he leads the Wil Swindler Quartet and Wil Swindler's Elevenet. He also performs and composes for the 9th Lincoln Orchestra, the Colorado Jazz Orchestra, and the Latin jazz group Onda. In addition to receiving IAJE's Gil Evans Fellowship for 2008, DU recently commissioned Swindler to compose original music for his Elevenet. His Austin, Texas group the Chamber Jazz Ensemble has released one CD (NohJoh Music, October 2006), and two of his compositions are featured on the 9th Lincoln Orchestra CD released in December 2007. Swindler earned a bachelor's in music in jazz studies from the University of North Texas in 2001 where he performed, recorded and composed for the 1:00 Lab Band.

Arranger’s Workshop
Instructor: Tony Klatka
Students will explore the fundamentals of jazz arranging and receive feedback and support for arrangements they will write during the session. A foundational knowledge of jazz theory is required. Class size limited.
Tony Klatka is a grammy-award winning composer who has composed/arranged and played with a multitude of bands, including the Woody Herman Orchestra, Blood Sweat & Tears, and Frank Sinatra. His big band arrangements have been staples of many college, high school, and professional big band libraries for the last three decades.
